Tips
|
Welcome to Mikes free, HTML and VB
programming pages, plus Windows Tips
and tricks.
On these pages are, HTML advise, links to HTML tutorials, colour programs, free
programs and VB links, I hope some of these will be of benefit to you, please
feel free to use or distribute anything you find on these pages.
HTML
HTML is the programming language used
to make most of the web pages you will find on the Internet. Its not difficult to
learn the basics, so grab one of the Free Tutorials, a Free Web Page Editor and
have a go at building your own Website.
To see the code web pages are made from, right click this page now and choose
the option to (view source) the code looks difficult to write but modern editors
make it easy .
This site is constructed using Free
HTML Web Page Editors. Arachnophilia
is a free editor which has just been updated, is easy to use plus has a good
help section. The 1st Page 2000 Web Editor
is a totally free HTML Editor (with built in FTP) which means you can upload
and download your pages to and from the web, I cannot
praise 1st page 2000. Highly enough its
brilliant!!, links for both of these and Tutorials for Webpage building are on
this page.
FTP
Once you have made your first Web Page you will need to upload it using a FTP Program (File Transfer Protocol) To put it on your ISP's site (put it onto the World
Wide Web), there are links to two great Programs here on this site
Free FTP for Windows 98, or for any Windows operating system WS Free FTP (FTP programs are used to publish your
WebPages onto the Wold Wide Web.)
Most Internet Service Providers allow plenty of space for a free website to
be hosted on their main site (if you are a member), if yours does not there are free
site hosting services on the web that can be used anyway. You may have to display
a small banner on these if you are not a member).
Tip - when first using your FTP program it may be necessary to temporary turn off or reconfigure some Firewall Programs you may have running on your PC, as this can cause problems when uploading. Its obviously best to reconfigure if you can.
(If you have to turn it off "Please "don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards)
WYSIWYG
WYSIWYG editors are a particular type of web page editor, WYSIWYG stands for (What You See Is What You Get) they still use Html code but it is hidden from view (its a bit like using Microsoft Word ) to make your WebPages . This link is to a web page, I quickly made to try one out one of these WYSIWYG editors, the Editor I used was called Cool Page - - see how I got on .
If you have Windows 98 then by
default you will have FrontPage Express installed, this is probably the most
famous but basic WYSIWYG Editor out there, if you enjoy using it you may like
to try its big brother Microsoft FrontPage.![]()
Another Way
Some ISPs like Freeserve will let you build your own WebPages
on their Website free of charge using a very easy site building program that
they have developed especially for this use, it is intended for novices
or people who are not interested in learning how to code pages etc.. All you
need to do is go to their Website use the pre-made templates etc. to build
your own site, exactly how you want it, its built on the web so no hassle
uploading pages etc. No programs to download to your PC, every thing you need
is there on the site, When you have finished your site you can publish it
instantly onto the Internet. Then use the Statistics button to view a detailed
report showing the number of visitors your site attracted and which pages
they viewed.
Interested? This link will take you straight to one of these. Freeserve Web Builder.
Colour Picker
Your WebPages and backgrounds need to have colour to bring them to life most of the editors have their own colour picker programs incorporated in the main program, but its also good sense to have your own separate colour picker, details of one which is free to download is on This Page ( plus you can try it out).
Graphics
As you progress and add more graphics to the pages of your website ,there is a free graphics program that you can download from this site ,its very good for minor adjustments like resize or crop to modify your pictures, and best of all its free, all you have to do after installation is go to the website to register your copy at the Eyebrowse Website or if you download the Joe Barta tutorial there is a link for a free copy of Paint Shop Pro (old version 4) which has a thirty day trial period but will work fine after that time, it is excellent for web graphics. [Click Here to Download Eyebrowse]JavaScript
The WebPages that we have created can be spiced up with a language called JavaScript ,which can add little scripts (programs) into the webpage code. = What can this JavaScript language do for me you may ask?.
Well it can add simple tools to the page like a counter, or maybe display the date, or the time, or perhaps a game, a pop up menu, calculator the list is endless, try putting your mouse pointer over the word JavaScript above, to see a small JavaScript in action (a pop-up balloon with a message will appear), I have put together a page with some more sample JavaScript's on for you to see and try, by the way if you download 1st Page 2000 as your Web Editor there are lots of these JavaScript's ready built into the program for you to use straight away.
In the links below you will find one to Boogie Jacks web pages, this is well
worth a visit, on his site there are tutorials plus lots of help with building
web pages, his approach is humorous and easy to understand, but best of all there
is a program you can download called background magic. (In fact some of the
backgrounds on this site are made with the free version of the program) give it a look, try out his program and read his tutorials.
A good search engine for you to use. Type in what you want to find on the world wide web ,click the go button = Google search will find you lots of sites to choose from on your subject. Also you can go to Google and download the code for this search engine (exactly like this) and install it onto your website.
The Colour Picker There is a little program for
trying out background colours in HTML applications, the full code for this is
found in Joe Barta's tutorial above. [All colours used in HTML programs are made
up of numbers and letters as you will see] .[try it out!]
The VB Page This page has some visual basic links,
tips and tutorials and free program code.
