Visual Basic is a programming language developed by Microsoft, that
you can use for making your own programs that run in the windows operating system
,you can also make your programs tie into Microsoft programs like Word ,Excel
,Access and Powerpoint.
With VB. you can build programs that link or work with Webpages,HTML,Music,Video
,Databases,Active X controls, Games anything the list is endless. (Note VB.
is not the ideal program for writing games)
WHERE TO START ??. I have spent several hours learning
visual basic from books and Internet tutorials, some are good and some not,on
this page is some of the good ,to save you wasting time and money on the poor.
First of all you need a copy of the visual basic program, the best way to start
and make sure you enjoy programming before spending lots of money,is to buy
one of the books with a CD of the Working Model Edition of VB. included , its
usually on a folder stuck to the back page .The Dummies guide to learning
Visual Basic drops nicely into this category, then if you work your way
through the book plus other tutorials you may wish to splash out serious money
on the Professional or Enterprise addition of VB.
It is best to start with at least version 5.0 or 6.0 of VB [These have most of the latest extra's].
The reason you will eventually need the professional or enterprise
edition is that you cannot produce a executable file with the working model
edition .
The executable or (exe.) File is used to load up your finished programs,so other
users will need your programs to be built with an exe. File to be able to use
them on their computers.
Also if you want to produce a package that you can sell, the (.exe) File, is part of that package and the File you usually click on to set up a program on your PC for the first time and load it onto your PC's hard disk.
PROGRAMS
There is a simple packaged clock program built using VB. on my Home Page that you can download ,its in zip format complete with executable File, so just download ,unzip ,click on the clock to run the program, then right click the File and choose send to desktop a shortcut will be placed on the desktop which can be used to run the program.
Also there is a sample Calculator program for anyone who does not have the full professional or enterprise additions of the VB program to use. (If you have the full programs you will find this calculator in the sample programs that are loaded with VB)
A good idea is to follow one of the many tutorials from one of the websites below ,another idea to see working programs in the code form is to go to the Karenware site and you can download a lot of her programs in code form, this way you can see how the code is formed and understand the workings of good working programs(bug free).
Tutorial for desktop clock. If you prefer you can build the clock yourself ,just click the link ,and follow the tutorial . CLOCK TUTORIAL
1. Without doubt the best VB book I have
used is Microsoft's Step by Step Visual Basic 6.0.. by Michael Halvorson,
It was so easy to follow, kept you interested by giving plenty of small example
programs for you to try ,and went through the learning of variables and operators
etc. without becoming boring(quite a feat) ,a real must in my humble opinion,
this also has samples including the code on the CD ,(saves on the typing)
2.Another book I mentioned earlier that has the free CD with VB working Model
included is the Dummies guide to VB6 this is good and takes a light hearted
approach to learning vb.
3.Another book that also has the working model version of VB6
on its CD is SAMS Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours .
4.Tegosoft have some good books, that range right from the beginner level to the advanced programmer, there are some good free tutorials on their website that will give you a taste what you will find in the books.( Tegosoft homepage on the web)
