Windows Tips
These computer and software tips are written
from my own experience using a PC running Windows 98. Some may be backward
or
forward compatible to other Windows versions such as win95/win98/ Mel/XP
Note: These tips are written as a help/ guide and not intended
to
replace professional advice.
1.Safe Mode.....If
you need to get into windows safe mode or dos prompt from the start
screen = when windows is booting hold down the F8 button, this will
take you into a screen with several choices, from here you can choose
DOS prompt, safe mode or normal boot.
2.Windows Freezes.....If windows freezes on you, don't
press reset
,instead press (ctrl) (alt) and (delete), this will open up a menu where
you can get just the offending item to close usually the top item in the
box, this saves time and is kinder to your PC.
3.Shift key......If
you hold down the shift key while deleting a file, the file will be permanently
deleted bypassing the recycle bin. So be careful with this one as there
is no chance of restore if you are wrong.
3b....Also if you hold
down the shift key when selecting OK in the windows shutdown box when
restarting windows ,it will only restart windows and not the whole system.
4.Backup Address Book...... To backup the address book in Outlook
Express choose - File - Export - Address
Book then in the choice box choose -
Text File then click - Export - browse then choose where to save it to.
A file
with all your addresses will be saved to the folder or drive of your choice.
5.Forever Trying New Programs...
If you
are the type who is always trying out free programs or perhaps programs
from magazine discs. Then its likely your PC will eventually start to slow
you will have lots of leftover entries in your registry.
Try downloading Regcleaner its a small free program
that will clean up your registry and remove leftover entries etc. from
previous programs. There are loads of sites that will let you download
Regcleaner free .Type Free Regcleaner into your search engine and
you will get lots of choices.
Failing that go to = Webattack.com
6..Backup before installing
Software..... I know its been said time and time again but you really must backup your
vital information before installing any Software, however small the program.
Windows has a good basic backup program
for backing up your Software sometimes it is not loaded with the Operating
system but its always available on the Windows CD even in XP the Backup
program is there = Hidden well but its there. (XP - Try looking in Value
Add/MSFT/NT Backup).
Alternatively visit Karenware's
power tools and Download her free backup program which is excellent
I use it myself.
